These seriously insane fudgy Chocolate Orange Brownies are vegan and gluten-free. They are so quick and easy to rustle up and can also be prepared in advance.

So here it is, plain and simple, the ultimate flavour combination brownie. Though if you’re not a chocolate orange fan, maybe these Pretzel Brownies or Peanut Butter Brownies might be more suited to your taste.

I candied oranges, which by the way I did not realise could be done because I only ever see candied peel and assumed the rest couldn’t go through the intense sugaring- turns out they can. So on went a slathering of chocolate and the sliced orange candy, oooooooh yeah.
Why is this good for me?
- Dark chocolate contains flavanols which exhibit anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity. They have the ability to inhibit free radicals, which are unstable molecules or elements that can harm our bodies. However, be aware of the sugar content in chocolate, which can vary between brands.
- Oats are a great source of both soluble and insoluble fibre which helps to support the digestive system. One type of soluble fibre is beta-glucan, which has been shown to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. Oats have also been found to induce satiety which means they can make you feel fuller for longer. Oats are also rich in the minerals magnesium and zinc. Both are required for important metabolic processes in our bodies, such as nerve and muscle function, cell growth and supporting our immune systems. Naturally, they are gluten-free, but as they are commonly processed in factories that handle grains such as wheat, cross-contamination causes them to become a gluten-containing product so be sure to check the packaging to see if they are guaranteed to be gluten-free.
- Chickpeas contain 15g of protein in just 1 cup (164g). In fact, of all 9 essential amino acids, it contains 8, which is pretty impressive. In addition to this, chickpeas are a rich source of fibre which is required to support our digestive systems, prevent constipation and make us feel fuller for longer. They also contain the water-soluble vitamin, folate (folic acid). Chickpeas also provide iron – though as it is non-haem iron, should be eaten alongside vitamin C-rich foods so that it can be absorbed.

To make Chocolate Orange Brownies, melt dark chocolate chips with rapeseed oil in a double boiler then remove from the heat. In a separate bowl or cup, add some lemon juice to plant milk and allow to curdle. Once curdled, stir into the melted chocolate, which should be cooler. Fold in the cocoa powder, chickpea flour, oat flour and orange oil or extract. Mix until a smooth batter has been achieved. Pour the batter into a square baking tin lined with greaseproof paper. Top with candied orange slices (optional) and bake in the oven for 25 minutes. Allow to cool down in tin before cutting into slices and serving.
How do I store Brownies?
To store your homemade chocolate brownies, place in an airtight container for 4-5 days in the refrigerator. If kept outside the fridge, they can stay fresh for up to 3 days.

Most homemade and shop-bought chocolate brownies and blondies can usually be frozen. Simply wrap in clingfilm or foil and place either in an air-tight container or resealable zip-top bags. They can be wrapped and stored as individual slices or as a large slab.
