These seriously insane fudgy Chocolate Orange Brownies are vegan and gluten-free. They are so quick and easy to rustle up and can also be prepared in advance.

So here it is, plain and simple, the ultimate flavour combination brownie. Though if you’re not a chocolate orange fan, maybe these Pretzel Brownies or Peanut Butter Brownies might be more suited to your taste.

I candied oranges, which by the way I did not realise could be done because I only ever see candied peel and assumed the rest couldn’t go through the intense sugaring- turns out they can. So on went a slathering of chocolate and the sliced orange candy, oooooooh yeah.

How to make Chocolate Orange Brownies

To make Chocolate Orange Brownies, melt dark chocolate chips with rapeseed oil in a double boiler then remove from the heat. In a separate bowl or cup, add some lemon juice to plant milk and allow to curdle. Once curdled, stir into the melted chocolate, which should be cooler. Fold in the cocoa powder, chickpea flour, oat flour and orange oil or extract. Mix until a smooth batter has been achieved. Pour the batter into a square baking tin lined with greaseproof paper. Top with candied orange slices (optional) and bake in the oven for 25 minutes. Allow to cool down in tin before cutting into slices and serving.

How do I store Brownies?

To store your homemade chocolate brownies, place in an airtight container for 4-5 days in the refrigerator. If kept outside the fridge, they can stay fresh for up to 3 days.

Can I freeze brownies?

Most homemade and shop-bought chocolate brownies and blondies can usually be frozen. Simply wrap in clingfilm or foil and place either in an air-tight container or resealable zip-top bags. They can be wrapped and stored as individual slices or as a large slab.

Chocolate Orange Brownies

These decadent, rich, gooey chocolate brownies infused with orange oil are not only vegan but gluten-free too. They can be made in advance and are so easy to rustle up. Enjoy them as a tasty dessert, tea time treat or even as a snack on the go. They are eggless, dairy-free and also refined sugar-free.

Ingredients

  • 150 ml plant milk
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 200 g dark chocolate dairy-free plus extra to decorate
  • 80 g cocoa powder
  • 50 g oat flour
  • 50 g chickpea flour
  • 100 ml rapeseed oil
  • 100 g coconut palm sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp orange oil
  • candied oranges to decorate optional

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 180C.
  • In a double boiler, melt the chocolate with the oil then remove from the heat.
  • Add the lemon juice to the soya milk.
  • Once curdled, stir into the melted chocolate.
  • Fold in the cocoa powder, chickpea flour, oat flour and orange oil.
  • Beat until a smooth batter is achieved.
  • Pour into a square baking tine lined with greaseproof paper.
  • Bake in the oven for 25 minutes.
  • Decorate with candied oranges

Notes

  • Coconut sugar can be replaced with apple sauce, bananas or stevia as an alternative sweetener. If moist fruit is used, the brownies may need a few extra minutes in the oven depending on the quantity.
  • Oat flour and chickpea flour can be replaced with any other flours, such as coconut flour, almond flour or wheat flour.
  • Chocolate can be omitted and replaced with 90g cocoa powder, in addition to 65 ml oil or 90g nut butter to retain a moist texture.
