Crispy Crisp Chaat (Indian Street Food with a Twist)

Jump to Recipe Print Recipe
Vibrant vegan crisp chaat topped with dairy-free yoghurt, tamarind chutney, mint chutney, pomegranate seeds, fresh coriander and onions, served as an easy Indian street food-inspired snack.

If you’re looking for a snack that’s bursting with flavour, takes minutes to prepare and is guaranteed to impress, this Crisp Chaat is exactly what you need. Inspired by the famous Indian street food, this version swaps traditional papdi or fried crackers for your favourite crisps, creating an irresistibly crunchy, tangy and spicy dish that’s perfect for sharing.

Every bite combines crisp potatoes, cooling dairy-free yoghurt, fresh vegetables, fragrant herbs and sweet, spicy and tangy chutneys. The contrast of textures and flavours is what makes chaat so addictive, and this crisp version is an easy way to recreate those iconic street food flavours at home.

Whether you’re serving it at a summer barbecue, movie night, family gathering or simply fancy a quick snack, this recipe comes together in under 10 minutes with no cooking required.

Freshly assembled Indian-inspired crisp chaat garnished with chopped onions, tomatoes, pomegranate seeds and dairy-free yoghurt for a colourful vegan snack.

As a vegan dietitian, I also love that this recipe shows how meals don’t have to be perfectly “healthy” to be balanced. Pairing crisps with fresh vegetables, herbs and a protein-rich plant yoghurt creates a satisfying snack that’s packed with flavour while adding more plant foods to your day.

What is Chaat?

Chaat is one of India’s most popular street foods, known for its incredible balance of flavours. Traditionally, it combines crunchy elements with potatoes, chickpeas, yoghurt, chutneys, herbs and spices to create a dish that’s sweet, spicy, tangy, savoury and fresh all at once.

There are countless regional variations across India, each with its own unique ingredients and flavours.

This recipe keeps those classic flavour combinations while replacing traditional papdi with crunchy crisps, making it incredibly quick and accessible while still delivering everything people love about chaat.

Homemade crisp chaat featuring skin-on potato crisps, fresh vegetables, plant-based yoghurt and vibrant chutneys, ready in just 10 minutes.

Ingredients You’ll Need

For the Crisp Chaat

  • Ready salted crisps (or lightly salted crisps)
  • Onion
  • Tomatoes
  • Pomegranate
  • Fresh corinader, mint and chilli
  • Plantbased plain yoghurt
  • Tamarind chutney or sauce
  • Chickpea noodles (sev)
  • Chickpeas
  • Cooked potatoes with skin-on

Spices

  • 1 tsp chaat masala

How to Make Crisp Chaat

  1. Place the crisps onto a large serving platter or shallow bowl, breaking a few larger crisps into bite-sized pieces while leaving plenty whole for crunch.
  2. Scatter over the diced onion, potatoes and chickpeas.
  3. Spoon over the vegan yoghurt evenly across the crisps.
  4. Drizzle generously with the tamarind chutney followed by the mint chutney.
  5. Sprinkle over the chaat masala.
  6. Finish with pomegranate seeds.
  7. Serve immediately while the crisps remain deliciously crunchy.

Recipe Tips

  • Assemble just before serving to keep the crisps crisp.
  • Use thick plant yoghurt to prevent the dish becoming watery.
  • Adjust the chutneys depending on whether you prefer sweeter or tangier flavours.
  • Add different beans or nuts such as cashews for extra protein.
  • For extra crunch, sprinkle over roasted peanuts or toasted pumpkin seeds.
  • If serving guests, prepare all ingredients in advance and assemble at the last minute.

Nutrition Benefits

Although crisps are often viewed as an occasional food, combining them with fresh vegetables, herbs and plant-based yoghurt transforms them into a much more balanced snack.

This recipe provides:

  • A variety of colourful vegetables.
  • Fresh herbs rich in beneficial plant compounds.
  • Plant-based yoghurt, which may contribute protein depending on the variety chosen.
  • Healthy fats if topped with nuts or seeds.
  • Plenty of flavour without needing large quantities of added salt.

Remember, healthy eating isn’t about perfection—it’s about balance, enjoyment and including a wide variety of plant foods over time.

Plant Diversity Matters

One of the easiest ways to support your gut microbiome is by eating a wider variety of plant foods throughout the week.

This recipe contributes several different plant foods, including:

  • Potatoes
  • Onion
  • Chickpeas
  • Coriander
  • Mint
  • Apples
  • Chilli
  • Tamarind
  • Pomegranate (optional)

Small additions like herbs and spices all count towards your weekly plant diversity.

Serving Suggestions

This crisp chaat is delicious served alongside:

  • Indian-inspired sharing platters
  • BBQs
  • Summer picnics
  • Movie nights
  • Family gatherings
  • Weekend lunches
  • Party buffets

It also makes a fantastic side dish alongside curries, wraps or grilled tofu.

Frequently Asked QuestionsCan I make crisp chaat ahead of time?

Prepare all of the toppings in advance, but assemble immediately before serving to keep the crisps crunchy.

Which crisps work best?

Lightly salted or ready salted crisps work best, allowing the chutneys and spices to shine. Thick-cut crisps also hold their texture well.

Is this recipe vegan?

Yes, simply use a vegan yoghurt and ensure your chutneys and any optional sev are vegan-friendly.

Can I add protein?

Absolutely. Roasted chickpeas, tofu, edamame or black beans all work brilliantly.

Is crisp chaat spicy?

It can be as mild or as spicy as you like. Simply adjust the amount of chilli and chutneys to suit your taste.

Storage

This recipe is best enjoyed immediately after assembling.

If you have leftover chopped vegetables, they can be stored separately in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days.

Avoid storing assembled crisp chaat, as the crisps will soften.
